‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ Hits the Vista in 35mm

Tarantino’s long-awaited cut of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is getting a proper run in Los Angeles. From July 18-28, the Vista Theatre in Los Feliz will screen the full four-hour film on 35mm, using the exact same print that screened at Cannes back in 2006 — and yes, it includes the original French subtitles.

It’s hard to call this event a double feature becuase Kill Bill was originally meant to be one epic movie. During post-production, the studio decided it would be better released in two parts. That meant audiences never got to see the full, seamless story as he’d intended — until The Whole Bloody Affair was born.

For years, the longer cut became a kind of white whale for fans. After its debut at Cannes, it disappeared from public view, only resurfacing once in 2011 at LA’s New Beverly Cinema (also owned by Tarantino). Since then, it’s mostly lived in rumor and wish lists — until now.

This version doesn’t feature any major new scenes you haven’t already seen in Vol. 1 or Vol. 2, but watching it as one continuous, unrated film gives it a completely different feel. The pacing is tighter and the transitions make more sense. There’s also a built-in ten-minute intermission, which helps because it clocks in at just over four hours.

At $21 a ticket, seats are going fast — some screenings are already sold out, and the rest are getting close to that point. You’ve got options for afternoon or evening shows, depending on your caffeine tolerance and how early you want to watch limbs fly.

If you’ve only ever streamed Kill Bill, this is your chance to finally see it the way it was meant to be seen—on film, in a theater, with an audience. Watching it at the Vista — newly restored and reopened under Tarantino’s ownership — feels like a full-circle moment.
